What Tono does
Tono is a Chrome extension that analyzes the tone and clarity of emails you write in Gmail. You choose a recipient type and desired tone, and the extension sends your email draft to your chosen AI provider (Anthropic, OpenAI, or Google) for analysis.
Data we collect
Tono does not operate any servers and does not collect any personal data. Specifically:
- Your emails — never stored or logged by Tono. They are sent directly from your browser to your chosen AI provider and nowhere else.
- Your API key — stored locally in your browser using Chrome's
chrome.storage.syncAPI. It is never transmitted to Tono. - Your identity — Tono does not require an account, login, or any personal information.
- Usage data — Tono does not track how often you use it, what emails you write, or any analytics.
Third-party AI providers
When you click Analyze, your email content is sent directly from your browser to whichever AI provider you have selected:
- Anthropic (Claude) — privacy policy
- OpenAI (ChatGPT) — privacy policy
- Google (Gemini) — privacy policy
Each provider has their own data retention and privacy policies. We recommend reviewing them before use. Your API key usage is subject to each provider's terms of service.
Permissions
Tono requests the following Chrome permissions:
- activeTab — to read the email content from the Gmail compose window you are currently using.
- storage — to save your API key and provider preference locally in your browser.
- scripting — to inject the Tono interface into the Gmail page.
- host permissions for mail.google.com — to operate within Gmail.
- host permissions for AI provider APIs — to send your email to the AI for analysis.
Children's privacy
Tono is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from children.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes materially, we will update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of the extension constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
